Preliminary Draw for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea/Japan

The major official event to lift the curtain on the 2002 World Cup

Photo In the summer of 2002, the FIFA World Cup Finals come to Japan and South Korea. Before that, the participating nations must go through a long, grueling process of qualification. The Preliminary Draw for the qualifying rounds will be held in Hall A of the Tokyo International Forum on December 7th. This will decide the groupings for qualifying rounds in the six continental federations affiliated to FIFA (Asia, Africa, Oceania, North/Central America and the Caribbean, South America, and Europe). More than 4,000 people are due to attend the ceremony, including representatives from FIFA (the world soccer governing body) and the various regional federations, the Japan and South Korea Organizing Committees, the official sponsors, the world's media, and famous personalities from the soccer and sporting worlds. The Draw will attract great interest as the major official event to lift the curtain on the 2002 FIFA World Cup. (The draw for the Finals themselves will be held in South Korea in December 2001).

6th NICAF International Contemporary Art Festival '99 Tokyo
5 days to witness the future of art

Researchers from more than 50 countries will take part and exchange views on themes from fields of leading edge technology for the 21st century.

The NICAF Contemporary Art Festival was first held in 1992 with the aim of promoting modern art. It is now the biggest contemporary art fair in Asia, bringing together top-class art and artists from all over the world. A total of 438 galleries from 75 nations (including Japan) have taken part in the five NICAF Festivals to date. More than 1,500 artists have been represented by a massive total of 15,000 works. And around 380,000 visitors have passed through the NICAF doors so far. The 6th Festival, NICAF '99, is the first to be staged in the Tokyo International Forum. The content will be further enhanced, with 2,500 works of contemporary art rigorously selected from around the world, as well as the 1st Asian Gallery Meeting (Japan-South Korea Cultural Exchange Conference) as a related event. The festival will play an important role in new cultural exchanges and the issuance of artistic statements.

In the world today, there are up to 840 million people who can't even reach the minimum levels of nutrition necessary for survival. The situation is particularly grave in East Asia, where most regions could be said to face food problems. This exhibition of some 60 photographs by Magnum photographer Hakuji Kubota shows scenes of food production in these Asian countries. It will make us think how we can improve the food supply in the 21st century.

Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd., a company with its Head Office in Marunouchi, is involved in a variety of social activities. One of these is its concerts for elderly, disabled, and other local residents. This concert will feature many well-known pieces like "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "The Sea in Spring", played by the Orchestrio Zurich from Switzerland. Variously dubbed the "smallest orchestra in the world" and the "biggest trio in the world", this is a string instrument trio consisting of Noriko Kawamura (violin), Walter Gieger (guitar), and Fumio Shiroto (contrabass), who perform classical music mainly in Zurich, Switzerland.

Wiener Virtuosen is an ensemble mainly consisting of principle musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, led by its Concert Master Rainer Honeck. The Forum is in two sections, the first being a lecture on the theme "Energy and the Environment of Tokyo" (Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Shintaro Ishihara), followed by a panel discussion (including Keio University Graduate School Professor Yoichi Kaya, Kent Gilbert, and Kanna Kozu). The participants will discuss how we should consume and supply energy in future, in line with the basic rationale of the "Tokyo Energy Vision" set out by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government at the end of fiscal 1998.

Active worldwide as a talented young flamenco dancer, Hoyos starred alongside Antonio Gades in the film "Blood Wedding", then formed her own ballet company in 1989. Since then, she has succeeded in giving the first ever flamenco performance at the Paris Opera, performed at the Opening Ceremony for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and received the Spanish State Award of Honor in the same year, among many others. In Japan, too, she gave captivating performances in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1997, winning standing ovations wherever she went. Now, after a two-year gap, she's back again.

12th-century Kamo-no-Chomei, seeking to end his days as a hermit, created his own "cube" as a self-assembly type den. The "Cube" is the origin of all spatial relations and a dimension for the 21st century. This exhibition, the 5th display of works by the Nihon Miyabigoto Club, tackles the original issue of "bringing out the individuality and beauty in things", the theme and main purpose of "miyabigoto". The interior of the white cubes is colored with these various expressions.
