The 45th Annual Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society
An international convention that carries the future of diabetic medicine

May 17th (Fri.) - 19th (Sun.) Hall A, Hall B, Hall C, Hall D, Reception Hall, Exhibition Hall, D401, D501-503, G401-410, G501-510, G601-610 9:00` Not open to the public

The Annual Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society has been held every year for nearly half a century, evolving with the progress of medicine. The Meeting now attracts more than 10,000 participants and receives much interest from abroad as a showcase for research on diabetic medicine. This 45th Meeting will be on an even bigger scale than ever, with all the main halls of the Tokyo International Forum given over to it. And with experts invited from overseas as well as Japan, the event promises to have a highly cosmopolitan flavor. In the Special Lecture, Professor Pierre Lefebvre of Belgium, representative of the International Diabetes Federation, will talk about "What members of the Diabetes Society, particularly young researchers and doctors, now need to do". Meanwhile, Professor Yusuke Nakamura of the Human Genome Analysis Center, University of Tokyo Research Institute, a leading light in human genome analysis, will lecture on "Analytical Research on Disease Genes in the Post-Sequence Era". As well as these, around 20 symposia and workshops will be held. Since diabetes is a whole-body disease, this Meeting will feature researchers from other fields that have had little experience of participation in the past, with a view to making a positive approach from different angles. In the Public Lecture ("All About Clinical Diabetes"), moreover, the latest information will be made available not only to members of the Society but also to a wide variety of participants, including non-specialist doctors and diabetes sanatorium directors.

For half a century since then, the Fulbright Program has been highly acclaimed and is now the most highly respected program in the world. It has given overseas study opportunities to more than 260,000 students and researchers, and has contributed to the cultivation of instructors in a wide range of fields. There are currently around 150 countries participating in the Program, including Japan. Given the new international framework following the end of the Cold War, the role of the Fulbright Program is now increasing in importance. From May 20th to 26th, various events will be held in different venues of the Tokyo International Forum to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Japan-US Fulbright Program. From the 20th to the 26th there will be an exhibition by artists with a particularly strong connection to the Fulbright Program (A Gallery), on the 25th a Commemorative Public Lecture (Hall C), and on the 26th an Anniversary Ceremony and Symposium (Hall B). Elsewhere, a Fulbright Music Festival will be held in the Suntory Hall on May 9th (from 19:00). All are welcome to attend the various events.

Particularly responsible for enhancing the company's worldwide fame in recent years is Heinz Sperli, appointed from the Duesseldorf Ballet (Rhein-Deutz Theatre) in 1996 as artistic director and choreographer. In June, two world renowned ballet dancers, Tetsuya Kumagawa and Viviana Durante, will perform "Romeo and Juliet" under Sperli's artistic direction in Hall A of the Tokyo International Forum. These two have already produced exquisite performances in "Carmen", "Giselle", and the Macmillan "Romeo and Juliet", among others. This time, they can again be expected to portray a form of love to sway the hearts of the audience, with their skilful expression of emotion and superb technique. This first Japanese performance of the Sperli "Romeo and Juliet", featuring three of the most famous figures in the world of ballet, will surely be a spectacular show to further elevate the reputation of "master ballet".
