The 5th Active Aging Forum
A highly successful event held in Hall A (February 19th)
Hosted by the Active Aging Forum Organizing Committee
| We hear a lot about the "third age" recently.
This is a respectful term used to describe people in the golden years
of their lives, who are released from their former ties and actively
enjoy each day for themselves, and who involve themselves in society
as its principal actors. In Japan, where population aging is advancing
fast, a Forum in support of these people has been held. About 1,000
participants attended the first of these in May 1995. This 5th Forum,
however, was attended by more than 4,000 members of the public, including
those in the satellite venues at 5 locations around Japan. This reflects
the rising concern over the "third age", as well as the
success with which this campaign has been expanded. Many of the participants
had attended all of the previous Forums. On the day, much reaction
was evoked by a keynote address from Shigeaki Hinohara (President
of St. Luke's International Hospital) and a wholehearted debate by
Taki Kato, Kenji Hirokane, and Seiichiro Yonekura, coordinated by
Tomoyo Nakano. Here are some of the comments given in the questionnaire. |

"This was my first Forum, but I had a wonderful time, and want
to live life to the full starting from tomorrow. Please have the 6th
Forum in this superb venue again." (Woman in her sixties) |
