the Fulbright Program for human exchanges originally proposed by US Senator
J. William Fulbright in 1946. The Japan-US Fulbright 50th Anniversary
Ceremony and Symposium were held in Hall B on May 26th to mark half a
century of exchanges. At the Ceremony, congratulatory messages from distinguished
guests were followed by the Japan Fulbright Prize Awards by the widow
of the late Senator Fulbright, and the presentation of a 50th Anniversary
Donation from the Alumni Association. The achievements of half a century
were lauded in the presence of many alumni gathered in the auditorium.
In the Symposium, meanwhile, the keynote speech was followed by a Panel
Discussion on "The Future of Japan's International Intellectual Exchanges",
providing valuable hints for the next half-century.

Playscape Forum 2002
May 29th-30th・D501, Plaza, others
"Playscape Forum 2002", an event on the theme of children and
play, was held over the two days of May 29th and 30th as a collaboration
between Kompan Playscape Inc. and Bornelund. Nurseries, kindergartens,
and parks all serve valuable roles as places for children to play. In
the Forum, proposals were made on the shape these places should take in
the coming age, leading to a lively debate. In the keynote lecture, Professor
Per Kolle of Copenhagen University in Denmark introduced state projects
being promoted in Denmark for children of the next generation. A seminar
forum was also held by celebrated experts in various fields, and concrete
proposals were made for the future of these places where children may
play and grow.
