FORUM VOICE

Highly original works on show at the "Chinese Film Festival"

From September 18th to 22nd, a "Chinese Film Festival" was held in the Audiovisual Hall of the Tokyo International Forum and the Marion Asahi Hall in Yurakucho. Chinese cinema today is blessed with sufficient craft and creative talent to win plaudits at Cannes, Berlin, and other international film festivals, and is also attracting attention from Hollywood. The screenings and other related events attracted a total of 6,885 visitors. The Audiovisual Hall, where 23 documentaries and animations were screened, bustled with film fans every day. We asked viewers their impressions of "Marvels of Naturei’¿ŠïŽ©‘RWj", the amazing scientific documentary on the ecology of China's wildlife, and "Marvels of Creativityi’¿Šï‘n‘¢Wj" on the majestic architecture and unusual cultural side of China.

"Marvels of Nature"
š "The 'True Ecology of Pandas' was surprising. Usually we can only see them in zoos, so it was all new to me. I was also amazed at how tiny a new-born panda is." (Woman from Tokyo)
š "We don't often get a chance to see such precious films, and their content was very interesting." (Man from Mitaka)
š "The panda documentary was excellent. I learnt a lot about ecology. We don't usually get to see detailed films about the ecology of animals like the Manchurian crane, the giant salamander, or tigers. These should be shown on TV, too." (Woman from Osaka)
š "I heard about the Film Festival on the morning news, and really wanted to see it. The scale of nature in China is different, isn't it. I was amazed at how close-up the cranes and tigers were filmed." (Man from Tokyo)
š "I knew nothing about wildlife ecology, but was interested in the protection of animals. The film was beautiful and easy to watch." "I wanted to see the documentary about pandas, and asked my friend to join me. It was all so new and interesting." (2 women from Tokyo)

"Marvels of Creativity"
š "We had seen it advertised on TV and were looking forward to it. We saw 4 shorts, of which 'Chinese Acrobatics - Perfectionists Challenging Human Limitations' was particularly interesting. The acrobatics were excellent. We wondered if it really was possible. We're glad we came." (Couple from Chiba)
š "I came because I wanted to see the performing acrobats. They were fantastic. And the other films, like the documentaries on the Great Wall of China or boat people, also gave a good feel of China's diversity." (Student from Yokohama)
