22nd World Gas Conference Tokyo 2003: Opening Ceremony
Catalysing an Eco-Responsible Future

June 1st (Sun.)Hall A 14:00 Not open to the public

The International Gas Union (IGU), established in 1931 for the technical and economic development of the world's gas industries, is the biggest international organization of gas-related industries. The World Gas Conference is an international conference held by the IGU every three years as a showcase for its activities. With growing concern over the problem of global warming in most countries of the world today, energy and environmental issues are growing increasingly important. Natural gas, a form of energy that places a low burden on the environment, is being targeted as an important energy source for the future. In an attempt to meet these demands of our times, the theme for the 22nd World Gas Conference Tokyo 2003 will be 'Catalysing an Eco-Responsible Future". Under this theme, the Conference will provide an arena for lively debate and research presentations with a focus on environmental issues. This will be the first Conference to be held in Asia, offering a unique opportunity to discuss the energy problems of Asia from a global perspective. At the same time, it should serve as the first step in expanding the reach of the World Gas Conference in the 21st century

The "Third Age" is a respectful term referring to people who are freed from the constraints of earlier life, play a positive role in society, and actively enjoy life in their "golden years". The nucleus of the Active Aging Campaign activities, which started in April 1999, is the Third Age Forum, held with the aim of creating a society in which energetic "third agers" can also be active throughout their lives. This 7th Forum will feature a keynote lecture and panel discussion on the theme of "Active Life Scenes for a Wonderful Third Age". Participants will debate the issue of how individuals, companies and society can build a society in which "third agers" will play leading roles, with a focus on new ways of living and working from now on. This year, for the first time, there will be a concurrent Third Age Fair, showcasing companies in which third agers can feel permanently fulfilled. Please contact the Secretariat for details on how to apply.
