"Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku" is a program in which young Japanese and Asian musicians, selected by audition, form orchestras and choirs to study music through opera. Seiji Ozawa, who believes that "symphonies and orchestras are two sides of the same coin" as taught by his mentor Herbert Karajan, launched this project in 2000. His aim in doing so was to convey his own musical experience to future young musicians. As he says himself, "there is nothing better than opera to study modes of musical expression". In this 4th production, following the Mozart Series that continued over the last three productions, Johann Strauss's "Die Fledermaus" will be performed. Conducted by Seiji Ozawa himself, the production will also feature David Kneuss, Executive Stage Director of the Metropolitan Opera House, and leading soloists from Europe. To give young people a direct experience of real opera, about 1,900 seats on the second level of Hall A will be set aside for students. Here's a chance to enjoy a production full of visual and musical thrills, with song and accompaniment performed on the grandest scale, and to sense the enthusiasm of musicians about to take wing for the future.

When the Japan Florists Telegraph Delivery Association (JFTD) was founded, it offered a system of telegraphic delivery of flowers that was completely new at the time. Now, half a century later, it has grown into Japan's largest fresh flower telegraphic delivery network, and has become part of the national way of life. The JFTD has planned a varied program of events to mark the milestone of its 50th year, as an expression of gratitude to its customers and a new resolve for the next half century. Starting with the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Celebration held in the Tokyo International Forum on April 13th, the program also includes "Joyful Concerts" held across 10 major cities in Japan, the production of a "50th Anniversary Theme Song" written by former Sumo wrestler and media celebrity Konishiki, and the "JFTD Customer Satisfaction Declaration". Another of these events is the National Convention, bringing together all JFTD branches - from Wakkanai in Hokkaido in the north to Ishigaki in Okinawa in the south - under one roof over three days in late August, culminating in the grand finale of the "Joyful Concert"..

The Tokyo International Forum, as a site for exchanging and transmitting international art and culture, offers an attractive program in a variety of genres. Musicals are the most popular of all, and this time we introduce a special collection of three topical productions to be held in Hall C this summer.

Seven-Eleven Fantasy SpecialBroadway Musical "Peter Pan"

Miki Nakamura as the 6th Peter Pan

Scene from last year's highly acclaimed production
July 19th (Sat.) - 30th (Wed.) Hall C
Performance schedule - See below
Tickets: Adults - 7,500 yen / Children (3-12) - 4,800 yen (including tax / reserved seating only)

Ever since Ikue Sakakibara's Peter Pan first floated down to the Japanese stage in 1980, the Broadway musical "Peter Pan" has drawn children all over Japan into a world of fantasy and adventure, giving them courage in the process. At the Tokyo International Forum, this highly popular program has already become a seasonal event. The direction by Yumi Suzuki, winner of numerous theater awards including the Kinokuniya Theater Prize and the Prize for Excellent Direction in the Yomiuri Theater Awards, grips the hearts of adults as well as children. The showpiece this time is boyish, cute and very attractive Miki Nakamura, who was chosen from 15,015 applicants from all over the country as the new, 6th generation Peter Pan. Peter's partner Wendy is played by Catherine Seto, challenging the part for the first time. Her talent progresses in leaps and bounds, winning her the admiration of Japanese directors Amon Miyamoto and Koki Mitani. Captain Hook is again played by Shingo Tsurumi and Mrs. Darling by Rie Hiki. Both captivated audiences with their splendid acting last time, providing sturdy support for the lead roles. Tiger Lily will be played by cute Megumi Nishimuta, known for her beautiful dancing. The Braves are played by the Break Monkeys led by Naoki Iketani, who can vault over the highest box in the world, Wang Jian from the world of Chinese acrobatics, and other fresh faces offering a dazzling array of skills and individuality as they take the stage in turn. One thing is certain - Neverland, full of wonder beyond imagination, will appear in Hall C again this summer.

Theatre Musicale - Le Petit Prince

Aoi Miyazaki and Naoki Hosaka

Director: Akira Shirai
Aug. 6th (Wed.) - 20th (Wed.)
* No performance on Aug. 11 (Mon.) Hall C
Performance schedule - See below
Tickets: S - 9,000 yen / A - 8,000 yen / B - 6,000 yen (including tax / reserved seating only)

The Japanese "Hoshi no Oji-sama" is the world's only musical version of St. Exupery's book "Le Petit Prince", which has so far sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and 5 million in Japan alone. The St. Exupery family, who retain the copyright, have permitted stage dramatization rights for this Japanese version, which has been performed in 1995, 1998 and 2000. This year's production features Aoi Miyazaki as the Prince. This young actress is attracting great interest at the moment, as she has starred in a string of movie releases - notably "Eureka", a double prize winner at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival in 2001. She is aided by a dazzling cast, including Naoki Hosaka as the Pilot, Epo as the Rose, and Rolly as the Fox and the Vain Man. The production is directed by Akira Shirai, who has also displayed the great breadth of his talent as an actor in works by Koki Mitani. Musical direction is by Akira Miyagawa, who continues to release works of great originality on TV, film, or stage, such as his adaptation of "Evita" for the Shiki Theater Company. Look forward to a completely new musical version of "Le Petit Prince" quite unlike past productions, with a completely new cast, director, and musical director.

STOMP Japan Tour 2003

Photography by Oleg Micheyev
Aug. 22nd (Fri.) - Sept. 6th (Sat.)
* No performance on Aug. 25th or Sept. 1st
Hall C Performance schedule - See below
Tickets: S - 8,000 yen / A - 6,500 yen / Jeans Seat - 5,000 * Aug. 26th-27th only: S - 7,000 yen / A - 5,500 yen / Jeans Seat - 4,000

In 2002, STOMP returned to Japan for the first time in 6 years, and brought the heat of summer to Tokyo with them! This summer, they return once more for a long-awaited first Japan tour in 7 years. The astonishing live performance "STOMP", in which a cast of 8 create rhythm by beating objects like dustbins or sweeping with brooms, started in Britain in 1991. With an "off Broadway" run in New York, they have now performed in 32 other countries including France and Germany. In the process, they've culled a number of prestigious awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography. Big news for this production is the visit to Japan by Yako Miyamoto, the only Japanese female cast member, as well as the reduced ticket prices on August 26th and 27th. These have been earmarked as "thanks STOMP days", to commemorate the fact that total audience numbers around the world have now passed the 10 million mark. With no words and no story, there is also no language barrier, so even those new to STOMP will surely enjoy this performance. A flood of dynamic, even stylish rhythm, played out on a stage redolent of British backstreets and factories, is set to sweep Hall C into a whirl of feverish emotion!
