An immortal classic, brought to life by superb acting and a superb company.
The National Theatre of Greece - "Antigone" by Sophocles
Formed with the aim of reviving Greek classics in Greek by Greek players, the National Theatre of Greece has now been in existence for over a hundred years. Visiting Japan for the 4th time and the first time in 4 years, the company staged a production of "Antigone" in Hall C from March 11th to 16th. "Antigone" was written by Sophocles, one of the three great Greek tragedians, in the 5th century BC. As they watched this authentic performance produced by some of the top talent in Greece today, the audience appeared so engrossed as if to hold their breath... The endless curtain call applause that rang out towards the assembled cast and musicians at the end of the performance eloquently bespoke the success of this production and the deep impression it left.

"I'm a theater fan, and have seen various different productions. But it's quite a different thing to see theater in its original form. This is the second time I've been to the Tokyo International Forum. I hope there'll be more projects like this in future." (Man from Chiba)

"My mother is Greek, so I know the story well. But this time I got a very fresh impression, with new interpretation and characterization. The music was also very well designed, with a clever fusion of ancient Greek and modern music. The direction was excellent." (British man living in Tokyo, with his wife)

"In a word - outstanding. I felt moved to the soul. I have seen Greek tragedy before, when I was a student, and brought my daughter today as I wanted to show her how wonderful it was." "We attended the public drama masterclass before watching the performance, and that helped me understand the play better." (Mother from Nagano, with daughter living in Tokyo)

"This was theater at its best, with the power to overwhelm. The Hall is nice because it uses a lot of wood, which makes a soft atmosphere. This was our first time to visit the Tokyo International Forum. We liked it and want to come again." (Two women from Kanagawa)
