Mr. Akira Hasegawa - Digital Artist
The Tokyo Millenario has become a yearend feature.
In the Forum Millenario Club, which will be held at the Tokyo International Forum, the terminal point of the Tokyo Millenario, a festival of illumination, “Spiritual of Light,” will make its debut. A giant glass wing of 210m in length and 60m in height will evolve into another dimension. A must-view grand illumination event this yearend is produced by Mr. Akira Hasegawa, a digital artist. He will create a “Digital Kakejiku (D-K)” which is his own inventive idea. We interviewed him about the places of interest in this event.
Akira Hasegawa
Digital Artist. Born in 1947.
Starting with the Highest Award of the TV CM Section of The National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan, he was awarded various prizes such as the ACC Award. In addition to the title of “Ryukyu no Arashi,” an NHK taiga drama, he produced the titles of news and sports programs as well as thousands of TV commercials. Later he developed a D-K (Digital Kakejiku) from the ever-changing spirit of Asian people.
The examples of the D-K projections can be seen in places such as the “Kanazawa 21st Century Museum,” “Athens Aquapolis,” “Kanazawa Castle,” and “Shanghai Yoen.”

The splendor of the glass wing will be rediscovered. The “Art of Time and Illumination” will be displayed and can only be experienced here.
I think the Tokyo International Forum is a distinguished building among modern architecture. It’s really a shame to let such a building just function as a facility.
By decorating with the D-K, I want to inspire a spirit in this building.
I think the D-K can further expand the attractiveness of this building. By using a projector to project pictures onto the ceiling beams and the whole wall surface, the glass wing will be transformed into a giant space of another dimension. You may feel as if you are wandering around a beautiful dream world.
Approximately 40 large projectors will project one picture toward the ceiling, and one picture is projected using the total space as a canvas. The picture is something created from the unconsciousness, which is beyond any genre such as concretization or abstraction. The picture appears not to change, but when you stare at it, it is transformed with every moment, coinciding with the earth’s rate of rotation. It is a movement similar to that of the moon or the changing color of the sky in the evening. When you stare at the moon, you may not notice at first, but when you take a look at it again after a while, the moon has changed its position. The movement of time in the evening is very slow, but the color of the sky changes in an instant. In the D-K, such movement as the earth’s rate of rotation, which appears to be still but is actually very fast, is used.
The “rhythm of life” is expressed in digital form. The light moves with every moment.
1 million pictures saved in the computer will be projected one after the other, but the order is not programmed and the computer itself doesn’t know which one will appear next. The different pictures are not combinations of two pictures. Since they are digital pictures, they are made of 270,000 dots (pixel). If one dot is changed, the picture differs from the previous one, and it is not same as the next one, either. When all 270,000 dots are changed, the next picture will show up. The changing speed acts in connection with the earth’s rate of rotation. One still image changes to another still image like the waves of the sea.
This shows an activity of the universe. The D-K is in sympathy with the activity of the universe and the rhythm of life. I want to create time for modern people who have become the slaves of computers in their lives, where they can get back to the original life of the universe.
There may be some people who will be sitting and meditating somewhere in the main lobby, looking up at the ceiling. There may be some who will enjoy the changing views, walking around the building. I am sure the view from the lounge of 7th floor will be magnificent. By actually experiencing the D-K, I am sure you will rediscover the splendor of this building, something you may have not noticed before.

A Pre-event for “A Day of Enthusiasm” Music Festival
The first wave of the prologue of “A Day of Enthusiasm”!
■ Club Classics Free classical music concert
Place : Exhibition Hall of Glass Wing Basement 2F
Admission : Free
45-minute classical music concerts by professional and amateur artists will be performed every day. 5 to 7 concerts each day. On December 31st, there will be 13 concerts including the countdown and New Year concerts. A total of 50 concerts will be performed during the entire period of the event.
Performers : Marunouchi Symphony Orchestra, Izumi Notes, Ensemble of Senzoku Gakuen University of Music, Marching Band of Elementary/Junior-high/High Schoolers, Vent du nord, a clarinet ensemble and others
■ Club Mozart Lecture on Mozart
Lecturers who have a detailed knowledge of Mozart will share interesting stories about the composer.
■ Club Kids Elementary Course of Music for Children
This is a classical music concert and a talk show which can be enjoyed by parents and children.
It is an entertaining program for beginners of classical music.
Events for Kids
●Workshop (for elementary/junior-high schoolers)
◇ Making a Mozart Tapestry
We will make the tapestry using approximately 30,000 PET bottle caps.
◇ Making Musical Instruments
We will make musical instruments reusing PET bottles, cans and paper cups.
Concerts will be planned and performed using the musical instruments created.
◇ Sports Clinic
There will be lectures inviting guests such as soccer commentators.
Other entertaining events for kids are now being planned.
Forum Food Court & Neo Food Stand Village
In addition to the shops of Japanese, Chinese food and the Cafe in the forum, shops selling German foods such as beer and sausage will appear.
